Before technological advances enabled us to create optically clear materials, quartz crystals were used for telescopes, watch covers and microscopes. Even with astounding scientific advances, quartz crystals are still widely utilized for many purposes.
Quartz crystals exhibit an amazing characteristic known as piezoelectricity. When a quartz crystal is compressed, it becomes electrically charged (positive charge on one side, negative on the opposite side) and electrical current is able to pass through the crystal. You have probably used a crystal's piezoelectric properties when using a lighter.
Quartz crystals oscillate at a precise rate even under various temperatures, making them perfect for accurate time-keeping and technological applications. Most digital quartz watches use this precise oscillation to maintain their accuracy. Electricity from the watch battery passes through quartz and oscillates at a precise rate or frequency. For every certain number of oscillations, the gears turn to indicate that a second has passed.
Magical & Energy Uses
Amulets are usually a protective charm – often a single natural item like a stone. Talismans are often created out of several objects such as a pendant, or can be a single natural item like an amulet. Talismans may be charged with any of a wide variety of energies for protection, fertility, prosperity, etc. The terms amulet and talisman can be used interchangeably, but it is nice to know the technical differences.
Engagement rings and class rings are good examples of talismans, whereas holed stones or hag stones are good examples of amulets. Hag stones or Holed stones are naturally occurring stones that are pierced or have a hole in them.
Quartz crystals can be used as amulets for focus, protection and increased energy; or combined with other materials and charged to make a talisman for any magical need.
Crystals are used medicinally, either ground or made into elixirs, but you must use caution! Some stones are toxic, so know your chemistry.
