Anthelmintic

Anthelmintics or antihelminthics are agents used to treat expel parasitic worms (helminths) such as tapeworms, roundworms and flukes from the body. Parasitic worm infestation is known as helminthiasis.

Herbal references often refer to an herb as being a vermifuge, which means it expels worms. They may also be called vermifuges (to stun, Etymology: L, vermis + fugare, to chase away) or vermicides (killing). Such an herb may also be referred to as vermifugal.

There are many plants, herbs and natural materials used in herbalism to expel worms, or reduce their numbers. Some of the most available and safest are:

Garlic, Pineapple, Aloe Vera, Parsley, Flax Seed, Honey, Pomegranate, and Pumpkin Seeds.

Many herbs used as anthelmitics are highly toxic and should only be used by a well educated and experienced practitioner. Those with especially high cautions are:

Black Walnut, Tansy, Thyme, Wormwood, Cascara Sagrada, Senna, Black Cohosh, Butternut bark, Clove, Epazote, Gentian, Goldenseal, Malefern, Mandrake, Neem, Nigella sativa seed, Prickly Ash, Tobacco, and Wild Bergamot.
