Neopaganism SymbolsPart One: Neopaganism or Neo-Paganism is an umbrella term used to identify a wide variety of modern religious movements, particularly those influenced by pre-Christian pagan beliefs of Europe.

Neo-Pagan religious movements are extremely diverse, with beliefs that range widely from polytheism to animism, to pantheism and other paradigms. Many Neopagans practise a spirituality that is entirely modern in origin, while others attempt to accurately reconstruct or revive indigenous, ethnic religions as found in historical and folkloric sources.

The largest Neopagan movement is Wicca, though other significantly sized Neopagan faiths include Neo-druidism, Germanic Neopaganism, and Slavic Neopaganism.

Thirteen Principles of Wiccan Belief

In 1974 the Council of American Witches was formed with 73 Witches of varying traditions. They attempted to form a statement of common principles and definitions shared by Witches in order to dispel misinformation. These principles have been incorporated into one or more editions of the U.S. Army handbook for chaplains.

Here follows the introduction that accompanied the principles, this explains them better than we can, and the 13 principles themselves. Although most Witches embrace the Wiccan Rede, many embrace some or all of these as well. We have included some comments in italics.

There are several variations of this Charge of the Goddess, but nothing beats hearing it read aloud.

Lyrics:
(Some variations may occur in lyrics vs. video.)

Listen to the words of the Great Mother:
She, Who was of old also called among mortals,
Artemis, Astarte, Athene, Dione, Melusine,
Aphrodite, Cerridwen, Diana, Arianrhod,
Isis, Brigid, and by many other names.

Whenever ye have need of anything,
once in the month and better it be when the Moon is Full,
then shall ye assemble in some secret place
and adore the Spirit of Me, Who am Queen of all the Witches.

There shall ye assemble,
ye who are fain to learn all sorcery yet have not won its deepest secrets;
to these will I teach things that are as yet unknown.

And ye shall be free from slavery,
and as a token that ye be really free, ye shall be naked in your rites and ye shall dance, sing, feast, make music and love all in My praise.

For Mine is the ecstasy of the
Spirit and Mine also is joy upon Earth,
for My love is law unto all beings.
Keep pure your Highest Ideals;
strive ever toward them, let naught stop you nor turn you aside, for Mine is the secret door which opens upon the door of youth.

And Mine is the Cup of the Wine of
Life and the Cauldron of Cerridwen, which is the Holy Grail of Immortality.

I am the Gracious Goddess,
Who gives the gift of joy unto the hearts of men and women.
Upon Earth I give knowledge of the
Spirit Eternal and beyond death I give peace,
freedom and reunion with those who have gone before.

Nor do I demand sacrifice, for behold,
I am the Mother of all living things and
My love is poured out upon the Earth.

Hear ye the words of the Star Goddess,
She in the dust of Whose feet are the hosts of heaven,
Whose body encircles the Universe...
I am the beauty of the green Earth, and the silver Moon among the stars, and the Mysteries of the waters, and the desire in the hearts of humans.

Call unto thy soul, arise and come unto Me,
for I am the Soul of Nature, Who gives life to the Universe.

From Me all things proceed and unto Me all things must return.
And before My face, beloved of Gods and of humans,
let thine innermost divine self be enfolded in the rapture of the Infinite.

Let My worship be within the heart that rejoices,
for behold, all acts of love and pleasure are My rituals.
And therefore let there be beauty and strength,
power and compassion, honor and humility,
mirth and reverence with you.

And thou, who think to seek for Me,
know that the seeking and yearning shall avail thee not unless thou know the Mystery:
that if that which thou seek, thou find not within thee, thou shall never find it without thee.
For behold, I have been with thee
from the beginning and I am that which
is attained at the end of desire.
