Widdershins

Widdershins is counter-clockwise movement.
Also referred to as lefthandwise because you keep an object or the center of a circle on your left as you circumambulate (walk around it).  Less often it is known as lefthandwise because some Pagans regard counter-clockwise movement as a 'left hand path' tradition.  Widdershins is normally reserved for banishing, deconstructing and removing.

A Quick Note: In the Northern Hemisphere, Quarters are generally called beginning in the North or East and moving clockwise (deosil). For example, North, East, South, then West. Most of the books available about Wicca and Witchcraft use these correspondences.

In the Southern Hemisphere however, these correspondences may vary. Circles are still cast deosil (sunwise), but to those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, they would seem to be widdershins (counter-clockwise). The equator is to the North in the Southern Hemisphere, so North is sometimes representative of fire.

Lilitu in Australia writes:

<i>'We cast circles counter-clockwise which is still doesil, as doesil means sunwise rather than clockwise. We take down the circle counter-clockwise which is widdershins (against the sun). So, it is related to the sun, rather than the way clock hands turn.

Generally in Australia North is sun because the heat  is in our North, and earth is in the south, but this varies in different locations. . . There is no one generally 'accepted' way of casting due to the geography of different parts of Australia. . . circles are rarely cast clockwise or taken down counter-clockwise.'</i>

Witch Cats

Witch cats of course refer to felines kept by Witches, or familiars.  However, in the context of most of the articles here on PaganPath, Witch Cats usually refer to shadows seen out of the corner of the eye.

Words of Power

In magick, when you use Words of Power, it means that you are speaking (aloud or within your mind) words with intent, and using your will and desire to direct energy through those words.

Words of Power are often sung or spoken in a chanting manner, or with specific intonations in order to cause specific vibrations and harmonies (much like \OM\").

Words contain energy. When you know and speak the name of something or someone, you gain power over that thing or person.  Words of power are often invocations, evocations or summonings that contain sacred names or harmonious tones that call forth certain energies."
