A note about binding spells and things to consider. . .

Witchcraft is basically the combination of intuitive practice, diligent research, and self knowledge. Witches are dedicated to gathering knowledge, and are constantly seeking and learning.  This study is both external (as in books, the internet, physical experimentation, etc.) and internal (knowing yourself and your mind, meditation, etc.).  There is always a balance between the two.

Balance is a primary concern for Witches.  The point here is that Witchcraft is never an excuse to go around performing magick and casting spells at the drop of a pointy hat. Magick is only a small part of the Craft.  The ability to perform magick is almost a side effect of knowing yourself and knowing the techniques.  Many Witches find that the longer they are on their correct personal path, the less they need to do any spells.  At the same time, their ability to do those spells (if needed) is magnified greatly.  This is because once you are in touch with your power, then you are on the path where things come to you as they are needed, usually before.

However, there are times when a lesson has been learned from a difficult situation and you are ready to move on without further entanglements.  For example: You are a solitary Witch, floating around between groups.  Sometimes you visit other covens when invited to Sabbat circles, sometimes you teach a new student. Somewhere along the line you offend a magickal worker who has chosen not to be bound by the Wiccan Rede and they (and possibly their friends) begin to attack you psychically.  You have tried every protection spell, cleansing, and shield that you have in your grimoire, and now are weakened by the exertion.  The attacks continue and you do a mirror spell to send the attacks back to the attacker.  This fails as well.  Now you are fairly certain that it is time to cast a binding spell!

Binding spells are a last resort only!  In 20 years in the Craft, you may never have to cast one.  They can be seen in the light you would see a gun.  No one should wave around a loaded gun in order to draw attention to themselves and puff themselves up with imagined power.  The same can be said for binding spells.  They are the last line of defense and should rarely be used.  Still, any Witch worth his or her pentacle should have a powerful binding spell in their repertoire.

A good binding spell should be irreversible.  Therefore, be absolutely certain that you have learned everything that you were intended to learn from your circumstances, and be absolutely sure that you are not hiding any truths from yourself about your situation.  An example of a poor reason for a binding spell would be to get angry at your parents or friends for not approving of your chosen spiritual path, and then getting them out of your life by casting a binding spell.  This example assumes that there is not abuse present.  If you live with your parents, you are responsible to them to uphold their wishes until you have a total grasp of your own life (live on your own).

Again, it is good to approach binding spells like you would a loaded gun or better still, a nuclear weapon.  They are a last resort only, if even then.  When you are without doubt about doing one, and have sought all other positive solutions, and have explored all the reasons for the situation happening (problems are usually invited it in some way, so learn from that to prevent having to do more binding spells for similar situations that will arise to teach the same lesson) then you know it is time to do a binding.

When you perform a binding, adding words of power that include something like, "I banish you from my life forever! And from all my lives past, present and future!" can be helpful.  Again, be sure that you have truly learned any lessons the problematic situation was meant to teach you.

The only other element essential to a binding spell it your connection with the All.  Many, if not most spells can be worked by using your personal bit of energy.  That energy is a part of everything, so you have certain responsibilities to uphold when you are using it.  But when you perform a binding spell, it is sometimes necessary to draw energy from outside of your personal energy.  This means that any mistakes are still your responsibility, but it also means that you are more directly affecting many other parts of the universal web we are all travel, Wyrd huh?  This requires you to be firm in your knowledge and true to your connection with the universal energy (Deity/God/Goddess).  Respect the awesome power you will be working with and ask for assistance from your Goddess and/or God.  This will help to prevent you from causing the magickal equivalent of a nuclear holocaust in your life and many other lives.
